What this site collects
This site uses Google Analytics to count visits, in a way that doesn't set cookies and doesn't identify you. For each page you view, your browser sends Google:
- which page you viewed and when;
- the site that sent you here, if any;
- basic technical details, such as your browser, device type and language;
- your approximate location (country, region and city), which Google works out from your IP address.
Google Analytics doesn't log or store IP addresses. Because no cookies are used, Google Analytics doesn't link your page views to one another or to you. Google signals and ad personalization are turned off, and nothing collected here is used for advertising. The analytics reports show visits in aggregate and don't identify anyone.
Cookies
This site doesn't set cookies, and Google Analytics doesn't set or read any here. If an earlier visit left Google Analytics cookies in your browser, the site deletes them.
If you'd rather not be counted at all, a browser setting or extension that blocks trackers stops Google Analytics from loading. The site works the same without it.
Who receives the data
Google LLC processes the analytics data for this site and may store it outside Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject to the laws there. Google explains its handling in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and in its Privacy Policy.
How long it's kept
Google Analytics keeps visit-level data for the retention period set in this site's Google Analytics account, then deletes it. Reports built from that data, which don't identify anyone, may be kept longer.
Forum registration
If you register for a candidates forum, the site saves the name and email address you enter and, if you give one, your firm or organization, along with when you registered. Registering also asks you to confirm that you're a member of the Law Society of Alberta, since the forum is intended for Alberta lawyers. These details are used to manage registration and attendance for that forum, including emailing you the details to join ahead of the event. Only the site's organizers can see them.
Registrations made before October 26, 2026 also include the Law Society roll number given at the time. It's used only to confirm that those registrants are among the lawyers the forum is intended for.
Registrations are stored in a Cloudflare database, which may be located outside Canada. They're kept only as long as they're needed for the forum.
If you switch between light and dark mode, your browser remembers your choice in its local storage, under theme. It stays on your device and isn't sent anywhere.
So that the forum notice and the note about the role of a Bencher come up only when they're meant to, your browser keeps track of where you've seen them during your visit, in its session storage under forum-notice and role-note. These stay on your device, aren't sent anywhere and are cleared when you close the tab.
Hosting
Cloudflare hosts this site. To deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, Cloudflare receives your IP address and the details your browser sends with each request, and keeps short-lived request logs.
